Support for Transnational Families: Caring from afar and Family Reunification teaching resource

This set of learning resources focuses on the challenges transnational families settled in our region face when accessing services and life in the UK in general. Families across different national borders often find themselves pulled in different directions culturally – learning and embracing new language and cultural norms whilst retaining a loyalty to the language and culture back home.

The resources can be used in class to explore the theme of family, the challenges of multi-generational settlement, and also issues around transnational family life.  They have been developed by MESH as part of an international research project called Transnational families in Europe: Care, Inequalities and Wellbeing across generations.  This project is led by the University of Reading, working with academic and non-academic partners across the UK, France, Spain and Sweden.  MESH is one of the project partners.

Our learning resource builds on a film produced by the Research team.  There are different resources around the themes of language for emotional well-being, language for family relationships, public and family language, language for accessing GP services as well as language for families in different places.

This resource includes slides for classroom presentation with embedded activities, a keywords list with audio, teaching notes and worksheets. Resources can be used with ESOL learners at a variety of levels.

Transnational Families - Caring and seeking reunification: a video resource

This film explores some of the situations and challenges transnational families face accessing services in the UK.
Entitled ‘Refugee Families Caring and Seeking Reunification’, it is a University of Reading and University of Leeds joint production in partnership with Rank and File Theatre. The film forms part of the ‘Transnational Families in Europe: Care, Inequalities and Wellbeing across Generations’ project.
The scenarios presented here reflect real situations faced by families who are seeking reunification. The film also includes hypothetical scenarios for improved access to services.
