Out & About: Sharing Progression Pathways at Leeds City College ESOL Teach Meet

Safina and Angela were delighted to deliver a session on our Progression Pathways resource at the Leeds City College Cross-Provider ESOL Teach Meet.

It was fantastic to see ESOL teachers, volunteers and practitioners from further education and the voluntary sector, with colleagues joining from  Hull College, York College, Shipley College , LASSN, NARI EKTA, The Rose Collective and Leeds University.

The session explored how the Progression Pathways resource has grown from conversations with learners and providers across Yorkshire and the Humber to a resource that can be used in the classroom. We discussed how every learner’s journey is unique and how progression can include volunteering, employment, further study, building confidence and becoming more involved in the community. The discussions throughout the session were inspiring. Participants shared ideas, reflected on the challenges learners face. We explored how progression is rarely a straight line.

The positive response reinforced the importance of collaboration between colleges and community organisations. By working together, we can create clearer progression routes and better support learners to achieve their goals.

If you’re looking for practical ways to help learners explore their next steps, why not try the Progression Pathways resource? It includes illustrated learner journeys, classroom activities and tutor guidance that can be adapted for a wide range of ESOL settings. You can explore the resource on Learning English Plus.

We hope this Teach Meet is the first of many opportunities to bring together teachers, volunteers and organisations across the region to share ideas, build partnerships and continue improving opportunities for ESOL learners.
