ESOL Lunchtime Showcase sessions 2024-25
Full recordings of our online ESOL Lunchtime Showcase sessions during the 2024-25 academic year. The ESOL Lunchtime Showcase is an online CPD series organised jointly by MESH and Migration Yorkshire. The sessions showcase good practice in our region related to a range of topics of interest to ESOL practitioners and those who support refugees, asylum seekers and other migrant groups. In 2024-25 our sessions covered topics from volunteering to literacy to digital learning. See details of each session below.
Volunteers are a vital resource. They often work in the ESOL classroom, either supporting specific learners or leading sessions in community sector environments. In this session, we showcase initiatives that help to support and develop the skills of volunteer teachers as an integrated and complementary facet of the ESOL sector.
Volunteering can provide enormous benefit for ESOL learners in terms of developing language and employability skills, fostering a sense of belonging and integration and building confidence. Collaborations between ESOL providers and other organisations offering. In this session ESOL learners speak about their experience of volunteering.
If learners are unable to read or write in their home language, developing reading and writing skills in English emerges as a huge challenge. In this session we focused on ESOL & Literacy issues, with presentations from Cathy Clarkson of Bradford College and Lucy Palmer of Wakefield College.
In this second Showcase focused on ESOL and Literacy, we hear more about how practitioners across our region address diverse issues related to theme.
Digital skills are today required for all kinds of everyday communication. In the face to face classroom, embracing digital skills and learning English through digital means is now a fundamental element of ESOL – a critical skill for life that all ESOL practitioners need to take account of. In this session we consider issues to do with ESOL learning in the digital age.
