Course – Teaching ESOL literacy learners (3 day course)

This practical and engaging course explores both the theory and practice of working with ESOL learners who have beginner and emerging literacy skills. It is designed to build participants’ confidence and effectiveness in supporting learners who are new to reading and writing in English.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • explore and analyse how reading and writing skills develop, from beginner to post-beginner literacy
  • understand the crucial role of oral language in the development of literacy
  • develop their knowledge of effective teaching and learning approaches, including phonics
  • select, design and adapt materials and resources to meet the needs of literacy learners
  • assess learners’ literacy needs and respond to them more confidently
  • plan, differentiate and manage individual lessons and courses
  • develop a clearer understanding of dyslexia and neurodivergence in ESOL contexts
  • use creative, participatory activities that move beyond traditional “pen and paper” tasks
  • use effective strategies and adapt resources for classroom use.

A Learning Unlimited TELLs Certificate will be awarded to all those who complete the course.

To consolidate learning, participants will complete a practical follow-up task after Day 1 and Day 2.

I have a CETLA, would this course be relevant to me?

The TELLs course focuses on an aspect of teaching that is often not covered in depth on CELTA programmes—supporting learners with literacy needs—and therefore provides a valuable addition to CELTA training. It equips teachers with practical, classroom-ready strategies to support learners who have low or no literacy skills in English and, in some cases, limited literacy in their first language.
