MESH Autumn newsletter, 2025

Greetings from the MESH team as we enter September and a new academic year.  We hope our colleagues and friends across the region have had a good summer.

Learning English in Yorkshire & Humber (LEYH)

The MESH team have continued to maintain the LEYH resource over the summer.

We are also happy to introduce a new Information Resource for Learners on the LEYH homepage.  This is a general introduction to ESOL. Follow the Introduction to ESOL for new migrants link on the homepage to access the new resource. It explains  what kinds of provision you can access, and explains the qualifications you can take to progress in your English learning.  There is also tailored information and advice about eligibility to access classes, according to immigration status.  Just follow the right gateway on the page to access this information.  It also includes a film introducing ESOL for learners. You can view the film here as a taster!

We hope that all providers have had the opportunity to update information about their provision as we enter the new academic year.  If you are not sure how to update your information, please mail your usual MESH development worker contact and they will support you to do this. You can view details of our Development workers here, or contact us at info@yhmesh.org.uk.

Learning English Plus

During the summer, we produced a new Teaching Resource for practitioners to use in the classroom with their learners.  This resource builds on the work of a Higher Education project at Universities of Reading and Leeds working with displaced and often multiply dispersed families to explore challenges they face accessing care services.  The research has led to the production of films recreating some of these challenges. Our teaching resource builds on this work, exploring issues of transnational communication and family reunification, particularly in relation to care services.

MESH and Migration Yorkshire will hold their first CPD event of the year on 16th September, 12:30 to 13:30.  ESOL practitioners are very welcome to join us for our online ESOL Lunchtime Showcase session.  Please register for the session here.  The session is a follow on session from our summer Showcase focused on ESOL and digital learning.  You can view a summary of our summer session here, and the full recording of the session here.  On 16th September we will re-visit the theme of digital learning – how to integrate digital learning into ESOL, and how to deliver effective online provision.  If you would like to contribute to the session with a short 5 minute slot to explain an aspect of your practice or an idea you have related to the theme, please contact us at info@yhmesh.org.uk.

With best wishes for a productive autumn!
