Part-time ESOL Teacher & Language Centre Manager
Welcome to English is a Community Interest Company, which was founded in 2017. It helps newcomers (mostly refugees and asylum seekers) to learn English, make new friends and find out about living in Hull. This is achieved with the help of volunteer befrienders and through informal partnerships with community organisations. We currently work with adults only. We follow Hull schools term times.
Gross Salary: £26,500 pro rata
Hours: Averaging 18 hours / week. Schedule to be agreed between employer and employee.
The majority of the work will be term-time
Benefits: Employers pension contribution 3%
Holidays: 28 days including bank holidays (pro rata)

Location: We are based at The Octagon, Walker Street, Hull, HU3 2RA, with some visits in
and around the city
Probationary Period: 2 Months
Contract: Fixed-term of approximately 2 years and 10 months, subject to funding.
Job Summary To teach ESOL, manage the Welcome to English Language Centre and to provide professional, efficient and effective administrative support to Welcome to English.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be responsible for, or assist with:
- Teaching English classes and providing support during sessions (sometimes unsupervised) to students, teachers and volunteers
- Creating teaching resources
- Ceeping the language centre organised and tidy and stock management
- Recruiting, onboarding and managing volunteers
- Registering new students and monitoring progress
- Helping with activities outside of the classroom e.g. gardening or sport
- Liaising with partner organisations
- Handling correspondence
- Organising meetings and producing agendas and minutes
- Updating social media and other publicity work
- Keeping a paper and digital record of activities and attendance
- Managing our weekly goods from FareShare Hull and East Riding
- Operating and complying with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 2018 and relevant Welcome to English policies.
- Safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk, at all times. An up-to-date DBS certificate may be required.
- Assisting with other work, events and projects as needed and as reasonably requested by the Director
Requirements:
The Centre Manager and Administrator should have the following skills, education and experience: - Be an experienced, qualified ESOL teacher/teaching assistant
- Have good administrative skills
- Be organised, work in timely fashion and be able to use your own initiative well
- Have the ability to learn quickly and take on tasks outside your skill set
- Be willing to do routine tasks
- Have interpersonal skills and confidence working with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Have social media and IT skills i.e. be competent in the use of most Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel. A working knowledge of PowerPoint and Publisher would also be helpful.
He/she should ideally: - Speak a relevant second language (Arabic, Kurdish or Farsi preferably)
- Have experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers
Training Provided:
As well as on-the-job training, the successful applicant will be required to undertake training, to include: Level 2 training in First Aid, Fire Safety, Food Hygiene, GDPR, Adult
