Action for ESOL was an inspiring, grassroots campaign against planned cuts in funding that would have devastated ESOL provision. Set up in 2011, the campaign brought together ESOL teachers, students and researchers, and supporters from outside the sector, including community groups and UCU. The campaign was creative and lively and played a key role in pressurising the coalition government to agree a U-turn on its planned funding cuts.
Emerging out of the campaign, the ESOL Manifesto was a collective statement of beliefs and principles drafted by activists in the campaign and a unique document in recent further and adult education.

This online conference will revisit the campaign and manifesto. It will be a chance to celebrate and to consider: why were the campaign and manifesto significant? Is the manifesto still relevant? What has changed in ESOL since 2012? Whether you were involved in the campaign and manifesto or started in ESOL after that time, do come along to this important event.
