  Lesson Planning for the 21st Century course

  The course offer is online, as well as in-person classes. The online course will be in the morning (9:15am to 12:00pm) and the in-person, in the afternoon (1:15pm to 4:00pm). The course will last for 6 weeks. It is free for residents of South Yorkshire, but we accept participants from other areas, for a fee.   Right to Remain Workshop

  Join the Knowledge is Power workshop to learn the basics of the UK asylum process using the trusted Right to Remain Toolkit. This free, practical session is ideal for ESOL teachers, community support workers, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers who want to better understand their rights in the UK. Gain the knowledge and confidence to navigate the system, support others, and challenge harmful myths around migration. Session Time: 6pm – 8pm

  Linguistic justice: a summer school for teachers

  All Dates: 12 June 2025 | 04 July 2025 - please note this is a multi-date training event.

  This FREE summer school will be led by Dr Ian Cushing, Senior Lecturer in Critical Applied Linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University. Dr Cushing, an ex-school teacher, is a world-leading scholar in issues of language and social justice, whose work focuses on the production and maintenance of linguistic inequalities in schools. The summer school is fully funded by MMU AHEAD’s scheme, with all travel, expenses, and refreshments paid for.

  ESOL Research Community

  Join Esther Wilkey (Bradford College) and Matthew Collins (Royal Shakespeare Company) as they share findings from a unique action research project exploring the impact of rehearsal-room techniques in ESOL settings.   English for Action

  1-Day Workshop – 10:00am – 4:00pm This practical and theory-rich workshop explores participatory ESOL teaching, drawing on influential approaches such as Paulo Freire’s popular education, Elsa Auerbach’s literacy work, and Action Aid’s Reflect ESOL project. Participants will gain hands-on experience with participatory tools and methods, and be introduced to the EFA curriculum framework (Making Meaning, Going Deeper, Broadening Out) as an alternative to traditional course planning models. Ideal for ESOL teachers and migrant rights campaigners interested in socially engaged language education.

  English for Action

  This hands-on workshop introduces ESOL teachers, volunteers, and migrant rights activists to people’s theatre traditions adapted for language learning. Developed over 10 years by EFA, the approach draws on Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, including forum, legislative, and newspaper theatre. Participants will explore how theatre techniques can transform ESOL classrooms into spaces for critical thinking, expression, and empowerment. You’ll build a toolkit of games, body-based communication techniques, and forum theatre methods using real-life stories.
