ESOL & AI. Exploring issues and strategies for delivery
We invite you to join us for our third Regional Networking event of 2026.
It is stating the obvious to say that AI is having an increasing influence over the practice and processes of learning and teaching. AI can help hard pressed teachers to complete tasks, plan effectively and deliver rich material in the classroom. Agentic AI – that is responsive, adapting to individual situations – has strong potential for facilitating independent learning. At the same time, there are concerns about the impact of AI on the shape of learning and teaching, as well as broader concerns about the environmental and societal impact of AI systems. The ESOL sector is no different. It shares these potential benefits and concerns. An additional dimension relates to the relationship between ESOL and the politics of immigration. Most people will be aware of (admittedly vague and speculative) suggestions made by some politicians that people coming to this country should not receive public funds to help them learn English, as they should be able to acquire language competence by engagement with agentic AI tools such as Duolingo. This just shows some of the ways that AI is reaching in to many different facets of ESOL delivery.
