From Crisis to Care: Migrant Experiences and the Struggle for Social Support

Date/time – 12th November 10am – 12pm, online

This webinar explores the growing challenges at the intersection of migration and social care, focusing on how increasingly restrictive policy environments, systemic discrimination, and sustained funding cuts are reshaping access to support. Migrants often face significant barriers in navigating complex and hostile systems, understanding their entitlements, and receiving timely and appropriate care. At the same time, practitioners encounter uncertainty around eligibility criteria and limitations in statutory provision, which can delay or prevent effective intervention. The webinar will examine these dynamics, drawing on research that captures the perspectives of social care practitioners, the lived experiences of migrants, and the impact of specific policy frameworks such as NRPF (No Recourse to Public Funds).

Speakers:

Julie Walsh (Centre for Care, University of Sheffield) – Hostile environments in times of austerity: The ‘generative consequences’ for UK based social care practitioners working with members of migrant families

Lucy Leon (COMPAS, University of Oxford) – Beyond the welfare safety net: adult social care and no recourse to public funds (NRPF)

Majella Kilkey (Centre for Care, University of Sheffield) and Justin Espoir Machongo (Stand As One) – The Coloniality of Integration: Care and Refugee Resettlement in the UK

Following the presentations, Yasna S. Khan (community organiser and researcher with Together in Unity, COMPAS and Race on the Agenda) and Maria Teresa Ferazzoli (IMPACT Networks deputy lead and CIRCLE) will reflect on the findings and consider pathways toward more equitable and accessible social care systems.
